Story Behind the Song

I hadn’t written a song in quite some time. After a few requests from people to write something for primary age children for their study of the New Testament in 2023, I decided I would give it all my effort.

As I sat at my piano bench, I said a prayer and just waited for some ideas, thoughts and music to form. Within a couple of hours, this song came in rough form; yet, a simple message about the importance of teaching children about Jesus Christ.

Children crave security, peace, knowledge (they are sponges!) and light. How many times does the Lord encourage us to be like little children. They point the way in so many ways as they are taught what is right. Their desires are pure and beautiful.

I have been imagining the powerful message that children could send singing this to a congregation. I keep thinking of the line from I Am a Child of God: “Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, help me find the way…” I love the sacred opportunity we have as parents and leaders to teach children about Christ – to try to show them the example – with the Savior as our guide – and to help them know where they can turn for peace. It’s a beautiful thought – children encouraging parents, and parents teaching their children – all working together for the salvation of their families and connected by the atoning sacrifice of our Savior.

The world would teach us to forget Christ. We can help them to find peace and direction by helping them point to Christ – the one Sure Anchor.

This song is a reminder to children – to keep learning about Him, and to us as parents – to take every opportunity to teach. If we are listening, the Lord will help us know when and how.

I believe we will have more peace in our lives as we personally turn to Christ and then teach what we are learning and discovering to our children.
