I Am His Disciple
Part 1
I am His disciple.
Grace and peace are mine.
When I follow Him in faith,
There’s pow’r divine.
I am His disciple,
Seeking all that’s true;
For Jesus Christ shows me the way
In the things that I must do.
Part 2
Faith and virtue,
Knowledge, temperance and
Patience with myself
And those around me,
Helps me learn to be more like God,
And grow in kindness and charity.
Sing Part 1 & 2 Together

I will humbly always try to be
His disciple in word and deed.

Story behind the song
This song came with a completely unexpected surprise!!
Sometimes I get a little spiritual nudge after I have written something – to scrap the work and go in a different direction! That’s exactly what happened!
Originally I had written this song as verse/chorus/verse/chorus. The verses were nice, but something didn’t feel quite right.
As I dove further into the scriptures (2 Peter, chapter 1 and Doctrine & Covenants Section 4) as well as studied a conference address by Robert D. Hales, “Becoming A Disciple of Our Lord, Jesus Christ”, I instantly knew that this was meant to be a 2 PART SONG!!
I felt impressed to scrap the two verses I had written entirely and then wrote a whole new concise part – which is now actually Part 2, and the chorus is now Part 1!
So the children will sing Part 1, then Part 2 and then Parts 1 & 2 together combined. The ending is sung together, with an optional harmonizing part on the last couple of bars. The accompaniment ties both parts together beautifully.
I feel that the words disciple and discipleship are big words for children, so my hope was that this song could help to explain a little more what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is the Master Teacher, and we are His students, ever seeking to learn – ever seeking to become. Charity, the pure love of Christ, is developed through these other characteristics. It is a state of being and becoming.
As Elder Hales describes, it is not a checklist. Different characteristics are developed over time and are woven together. The characteristics of charity – FAITH, VIRTUE, KNOWLEDGE, TEMPERANCE, PATIENCE, GODLINESS, and BROTHERLY KINDNESS lead us to develop CHARITY and to become like Jesus Christ.
Then, the reference in Doctrine & Covenants adds two more: HUMILITY and DILIGENCE. We must be humble to be teachable and diligently keep seeking to become as the Savior. I incorporated these last two in the the last two lines of the song.
And we have hope both through His Atonement and the example He has set of all of these characteristics – FAITH being the over-arching and necessary trait that we must built upon before others can be added unto us, and HUMILITY and DILIGENCE propelling us forward, ever learning, ever growing.
I really hope you enjoy this song! It was a joy to write, and I learned so much!
