A Fortress of Faith

Vs1
A fortress of faith is built as we heed
The words of our prophet dear;
For by the Lord’s voice or those whom He calls,
His message for us is clear.

A prophet of God speaks words for our day;
A watchman upon a tow’r
To warn of danger in our way
And keep us safe hour by hour.

Vs2
A fortress of faith is built as we strive
To sacrifice and obey;
For there is no promised blessing withheld
From those who will trust His way.

The covenants made in temples of God
Protect us with surety;
For those who walk this cov’nant path
Claim blessings eternally.

Vs3
A fortress of faith is built as we choose
To ask God, then do His will;
For when we take time to counsel with Him,
His blessings are then fulfilled.

Through prayer we commune with Father above
And humbly we trust His plan;
His answers come to us with love,
And knowledge is giv’n: we can.

Vs4
A fortress of faith is built as we seek
To learn more of Jesus Christ;
For strength will be ours when we follow Him
And live in His gospel light.

Each time we are still to ponder His word
Through scriptures both old and new,
A feast awaits and words of Christ
Will tell us all things to do.

Story Behind the Song

A Fortress of Faith is one of 5 hymns I submitted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a request for writers for the new hymnal and children’s songbook. This song was one of 17,000 other submissions made by many people with hearts like mine who wished to contribute. Although I don’t know if anything I wrote is what they were looking for, it was an honour and a privilege to write for this purpose.

I wrote this song thinking about 4 pillars that keep our faith strong.

  1. heeding and obeying the words of prophets and apostles
  2. keeping the covenants we have made at baptism and in the temple
  3. daily fervent prayer and trust in the Lord – whatever His answers may be
  4. seeking, studying and pondering the words of Christ

I feel like everything we do within the gospel fits within one of those four things. As members of this Church, our faith is built as we are actively striving and seeking to do God’s will. This becomes our safety, and indeed a fortress from all that could destroy our faith. As we put Jesus Christ in the centre of our lives, relying on His words as our guide and the Church as our support in the ordinances and covenants that bind us to Him, we find true refuge and protection.
